COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 6800 N. WASHTENAW AVE

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update regarding a recent officer-involved shooting that occurred near 6800 N. Washtenaw Avenue. COPA investigators responded to the scene immediately and commenced an investigation.

On October 26, 2024, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates this incident began when Chicago Police officers responded to a call of a person shot. While on scene, Chicago Fire Department (CFD) paramedics were rendering aid to a shooting victim when the armed individual discharged a firearm towards responding officers and paramedics. The armed individual continued to fire their weapon from multiple locations resulting in officers returning fire, striking the individual. The individual was transported to the hospital in critical condition. No CPD officers or members of CFD were injured. A gun was recovered on scene.

COPA can confirm body-worn camera captures portions of the incident and subsequent shooting. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
