COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON FATAL OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 7300 SOUTH DANTE AVENUE

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update related to a recent fatal officer-involved shooting near 7300 S. Dante Ave. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On November 6, 2023, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates that this incident began when three on-duty Chicago Police officers and an on-duty Sergeant in an unmarked police vehicle attempted to conduct a street stop involving one individual. As officers engaged, the individual began to walk away, and a physical altercation ensued which led to the individual discharging a firearm, striking one officer. The sergeant and two other officers discharged their firearms, fatally wounding the individual. The officer was taken to the hospital in good condition. A gun was recovered on scene.

COPA can confirm body-worn camera captures portions of the initial interaction and subsequent shooting. COPA investigators are attempting to identify and obtain additional video. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
