COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON FATAL OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 1800 S. BLUE ISLAND AVE

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update regarding a recent fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred near 1800 S. Blue Island Avenue. COPA investigators responded to the scene immediately and commenced an investigation.

On August 18, 2024, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates this incident began when Chicago Police Officers patrolling the area heard multiple shots being fired. The officers’ encountered two armed individuals, which led to both officers firing their weapons, striking one of the individuals, who was later identified as a juvenile. The juvenile was transported to the hospital and pronounced deceased. A gun was recovered on scene.

COPA is prohibited from releasing video and other materials in accordance with the Juvenile Court Act (705 ILCS 405/5-905(5)). COPA is committed to a full and thorough investigation into the officers’ use of force to determine if their actions were in accordance with Department policy and training.
