COPA RELEASES VIDEO & OTHER MATERIALS FROM ON-DUTY WEAPONS DISCHARGE AT AN ANIMAL NEAR 8400 S. RACINE AVE

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is releasing video and other materials related to an on-duty weapons discharge at an animal near 8400 S. Racine Avenue.

On September 12, 2024, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an on-duty weapons discharge at an animal. Preliminary information indicates this incident began when a Chicago Police officer observed two dogs attacking a victim while patrolling the area. As the officer was exiting their vehicle, a concerned citizen, who is also a concealed carry license holder, discharged their firearm at both dogs, fatally wounding one. The second dog remained next to the victim as Chicago Fire Department personnel arrived to aid the victim. As a result, the officer discharged their firearm, fatally wounding the second dog. The individual who was attacked by the dogs was not struck by gunfire during the incident.

“COPA determined this incident meets the qualification for release under the City of Chicago’s Video Release Policy, Section III. (A) (1), which covers incidents “in which a CPD officer discharges his or her firearm in a manner that strikes, or that potentially could strike, another individual…” said First Deputy Chief Administrator Ephraim Eaddy. “Materials released today reflects our continued commitment to transparency and adherence to the city’s video release policy.”
