Steffany Hreno, Director of Investigations
Steffany Hreno brings over 15 years of investigative and legal experience to COPA. In her current role, Ms. Hreno develops policy, guidance, and training for the Investigations Division, oversees the investigation of high-profile incidents and officer-involved shootings, and serves as COPA’s liaison with the FBI and Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. Ms. Hreno started at COPA in 2017 as a Major Case Specialist, before becoming Supervising Investigator of a major case team in 2020, and the Director of Investigations in 2022. Prior to joining COPA, Ms. Hreno served as In-House Counsel for a private investigation company in Los Angeles, California. She began her career as a litigation associate at a Chicago law firm, where she focused primarily on commercial and business litigation. Ms. Hreno holds a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School and a bachelor’s degree in Ancient Greek and Latin from Tulane University. She is also certified as both a Lead Homicide Investigator and a P.E.A.C.E. Investigative Interviewer.
